Geographic coding

Countries are coded by geographic continuity: the modern country name is used for the area studied, regardless of which historical polity controlled it at the time. For instance, papers studying the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, and the DDR are all coded as Germany.

Country names follow ISO 3166-1 English short names. Sub-regional groupings follow the UN M.49 standard.
